Bei der Diskussion um den Dieselmotor stehen vor allem zwei Schadstoffe im Fokus: Feinstaub und Stickoxide Beides sind jedoch nur Oberbegriffe:
In den allermeisten Messstationen wird lediglich der Feinstaub PM10 gemessen. Die Teilchengröße liegt in etwa bei einem aerodynamischen Durchmesser von 10 Mikrometern (10 µm). Diese Teilchen können die oberen Atemwege relativ gut selbst abscheiden. Der Feinstaub PM2,5 mit einem Durchmesser von 2,5 µm dringt bis in die Lungenbläschen und verbleibt dort oft lange.
Stickstoffe werden oft als NO x zusammengefasst, doch auch dort gilt es zu differenzieren. Stickstoffmonoxid (NO) ist als medizinisches Gas als Arzneimittel zugelassen. Nicht ungefährlich aber ist Stickstoffdioxid (NO2 ). Es reizt Schleimhäute und kann akut Kopfschmerz und Schwindel auslösen, langfristig zu Atemnot und Ödemen führen. Die schädliche Wirkung auf die Gesundheit gilt wissenschaftlich als unbestritten.
